Three simple lists sit beside your ledger: who you buy from and sell to, the names of your bank accounts, and the equipment you own.
They all work the same way, and none of them post anything to your accounts.
How they all work
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| + Add | opens a drawer with that register's fields |
| Search, Filter, Reset | narrows a long list and clears it |
| Add record | saves it; Cancel closes without saving |
An empty register reads No records yet. Use the add button above to get started.
Contacts
Customers and suppliers, at Accounts → Contacts.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Name / description | the business or person — required |
| their contact address | |
| Role | customer, supplier, or both — required |
| Notes | anything useful, like payment terms — keep it to what you need |
Bank accounts
Account names and currencies, at Accounts → Bank accounts. This is a naming list, not a feed — no balance, no connection. For live movements see Bank feeds.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Name / description | what you call it — required |
| Currency | what it is held in — required |
| Last Four | the last four digits, to tell two accounts apart |
| Notes | what the account is used for |
⚠️ Warning: Never enter full card numbers, account numbers or online banking passwords here or anywhere else in NeroBooks.
Equipment and other assets
The fixed asset register at Accounts → Fixed asset register records the long-lived things you own: vehicles, machinery, computers, fit-out.
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Name / description | what it is — required |
| Acquired | when you bought it — required |
| Currency | what you paid in — required |
| Cost | what you paid — required |
| Residual Value | what it should be worth at the end — required |
| Useful Months | how long you expect to use it — required |
| Notes | serial numbers, location, warranty |
💡 Note: The register stores information. Depreciation, disposals and capital allowances are separate adjustments and are not posted for you — record depreciation as a journal in Bookkeeping.
Why bother
| Register | What it saves you |
|---|---|
| Contacts | consistent names, so reports group properly |
| Bank accounts | knowing which account an entry means |
| Fixed assets | a ready list at year end |
Frequently asked questions
Do contacts have to exist before I record a bill?
No. Entries use a description rather than a linked contact. The register keeps names consistent.
Does the bank accounts register show my balance?
No. Names and currency only. It is not a feed.
Does adding an asset reduce my profit?
No. The register records the asset. Depreciation is a separate journal you post, and the tax treatment is separate again.
What do I put for residual value?
What you would realistically sell it for at the end of its life. If that is effectively nothing, zero is reasonable — your accountant can refine it.
What about a record I no longer use?
Leave it if an approved entry refers to it, so the trail still makes sense. A note is usually more useful than removing it.
